Born in Dunholm (Durham), Northumbria to Danish parents and apprenticed to a local silversmith.

Following his apprenticeship, he journeyed across Northumbria and Mercia as a travelling smith before settling in the Legecaestir (Chester) area. At this centre for the silver trade and the minting of coins, he has become wealthy providing jewellery to Viking and Saxon alike, whoever can afford his services.
